Women sentenced for keeping a slave
A Bangkok businesswoman was yesterday sentenced to seven years in jail for keeping a 13 year old girl from Buri Ram province as a slave. It is the first time in Thai legal history that the anti-slavery law has been enforced, despite widespread slave-like labour in sweat shops and private households.
On top of the seven-year sentence, the Criminal Court gave 50, another 31/2 years in jail for inflicting severe physical harm on her underage maid and ordered her to pay 200,000 baht to the girl in compensation.
